NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Frostburg State opened its Capital Athletic Conference slate on Sunday with a 74-47 defeat at Christopher Newport.
Senior Shawn Henson and sophomore Dalton Gaus each led Frostburg (1-4, 0-1) in scoring with eight points. Henson grabbed four rebounds, while Gaus knocked down one of FSU's four three-pointers. Senior James Peters and sophomore Tyler Michael both added seven points apiece.
The host Captains (3-0, 1-0) shot 46.7 percent with eight three-pointers and a 47-36 rebounding edge.
Frostburg held a handful of early leads, the final coming on a jumper from Michael with 17:11 showing in the first half as FSU led 8-6. CNU rebounded with a quick 10-0 run for an eight-point cushion at 16-8.
Peters hit a pair of free throws moments later to cut the deficit to six points, but the Captains slowly increased their lead to 20 at halftime. The hosts pushed their lead to a game-high 37 points midway through the second half.
Frostburg State returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Pen State Harrisburg at 8:00 pm.
