Frostburg Drops Home Opener

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg senior guard Nick Smoot poured in a career-high 26 points, but the Bobcats suffered an 89-68 defeat to Hood in the first game of the 2015 FSU Tournament, Saturday night.
 
Smoot was 9-of-16 from the floor behind 6-of-10 three-pointers to lead the Bobcats (0-2). Sophomore Dalton Gaus added 10 and was the only other Bobcat in double figures.
 
Hood improved to 2-0 behind three starters in double figures. Scott Bolen led all players with 28 points, five blocks and five steals. Davon Hill scored 21 and Trevor Magnuski added 13.
 
The Blazers shot 55.1 percent from the field and led by seven in the early going.
 
Frostburg rebounded behind three-pointers from senior James Peters (12:38) and Smoot (12:17) and a jumper from Gaus (11:19) as it led by one, 19-18 with 11:19 to play.
 
Peters hit a layup at 10:06 to knot the game at 21 apiece, but Hood captured an 11-2 run to lead by 10, 36-26 at 7:24.
 
Gaus hit a three-pointer at 6:31 to cut it to seven, 38-31, but the Blazers closed out the half on a 16-1 run for a 54-32 halftime lead.
 
Hood continued its hot shooting in the second stanza and held its lead around 20 for much of the half until the final horn.
 
Frostburg will play Randolph-Macon tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm in the consolation game.
 
Randolph-Macon vs. St. Vincent - Second Game
Pat Jones scored 20 and Jaylon Bell added 17 as St. Vincent (1-0) rebounded from a late hole for a 70-68 win over Randolph-Macon. Bobby Swartout hit a jumper from Bell with 1:00 left for the go-ahead basket and the eventual game-winner.
 
The Yellow Jackets (0-2) were led in scoring by Lamont Moore with 21 points followed by Jamie Wilson with 14. Michael Taylor added 13 in the losing effort.
 
St. Vincent will meet Hood at 3:00 pm in the championship game.
