FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball dropped both matches on day two of the FSU Quad Match, first falling to Stevenson, 3-0, then dropping a 3-1 match to Catholic, Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
In the first match, Stevenson (26-7) jumped out to an early 12-2 lead that they'd never relinquish in game one en route to a 25-12 win.
The Bobcats held close in game two, and led 6-4 early on. Stevenson used a 7-1 rally to jump ahead 11-7, but FSU scored the next three points to close the gap to one, 11-10. The hosts went on to take a couple one-point leads at 18-17 and 19-18, but the game remained knotted right up to 23-23. However, the Mustangs pulled out the final two points to take game two, 25-23.
Stevenson led early throughout the final set, despite the red and black coming within four, 10-6. The Mustangs never let the Bobcats get any closer and took the match with a 25-18 win.
Sophomore Naya Cheatem paced the Bobcats with 13 kills and three blocks while senior Aimee Petrides added 11 kills and one service ace. Sophomore Madelyn Torres finished the match with 27 assists and classmate Lindsey Scepura posted 12 digs in the loss.
Frostburg took an early 7-3 lead in game one against Catholic (17-16), but the Cardinals stormed back to take a one-point 9-8 advantage. CU then took off on an 8-0 run to push its lead to 18-11 and despite the Bobcats tying the game at 21-21, 23-23, and 24-24 to send the game into extra points, the Cardinals never relinquished its lead en route to a 26-24 win.
Game two saw Frostburg take a 4-0 lead, but an 8-0 rally gave the visitors an 8-4 lead. The Bobcats answered back with a 9-2 rally of its own to take a three-point, 13-10 lead. Tied at 20-20, FSU used a 5-1 run to take game two, 25-21, and knot the match up at 1-1.
Thirteen ties and six lead changes paced the third set. Tied at 20-20, Catholic used two Bobcat attacking errors and three kills to take game three, 25-21.
A 6-1 mid-set run gave the Cardinals a 15-8 lead in game four, but Frostburg was not to be deterred and despite falling behind 19-11, the Bobcats clawed their way back within two, 19-17. Catholic, however, capitalized on six of the final nine points to put the game away, 25-20.
Cheatem posted a match-high 25 kills while Petrides added 19. Sophomore Sabrina Roberts finished the match with five blocks. Torres (52 assists) and Scepura (35 digs) both posted game-high stats for the Bobcats.
FSU returns to action in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday, November 3. The sixth-seed Bobcats will travel to the third-seed Mary Washington. A match time is yet to be determined.
