FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team needed extra points in the first set, but powered past Capital Athletic Conference foe Wesley, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
The Bobcats (13-13, 2-4 CAC) were all business, leading the Wolverines (11-11, 1-5 CAC) in every category statistically. FSU held the advantage in kills (43-27), service aces (6-1), blocks (6-4), assists (40-25), and digs (52-49).
Sophomore Naya Cheatem finished the day with 18 kills and 10 digs, while senior Aimee Petrides added 13 kills and two service aces. Sophomore Elizabeth Hawkesworth had four blocks and classmates Madelyn Torres (34 assists, two blocks) and Lindsey Scepura (17 digs) rounded out the stat leaders for the hosts.
Game one saw 18 ties and nine lead changes as FSU led 4-1 early on. Wesley held off the Bobcats and took a slight 12-11 advantage in the middle of the set. Frostburg then rallied for five-straight points and a 16-12 lead, but the Wolverines countered with a 7-3 run to knot the game at 19-19. Both teams traded the lead and the Bobcats were in trouble as the visitors were up 27-26 and poised to steal the set. Frostburg never gave up, however, and was able to earn three consecutive kills, one from sophomore Sabrina Roberts and two from Cheatem, to earn a hard-fought 29-27 win.
The red and black took an early 7-1 lead in game two and despite Wesley tying the game twice, the Bobcats never relinquished their lead. Tied at 8-8, Frostburg used a 12-2 run to quickly jump out to a double-digit lead, 20-10. The Wolverines scored just three points after that, two on Bobcat errors, and Frostburg easily handled the second set, 25-13.
Game three was much like the previous, with the hosts not allowing Wesley to score more than two consecutive points in the set. The visitors managed to come within two, 12-10, but Frostburg pushed their lead with eight-straight points to take another 20-10 advantage. Again, both teams traded points before the Bobcats put the game away with a 25-15 victory.
Tionne Graves-Brown led Wesley with nine kills, while teammate Meghan Marshall added 13 digs for the visitors.
