DOVER, Del. – Frostburg State closed its deficit to three points late in the game but couldn't complete the comeback in a 64-60 loss to Wesley in Dover, Sunday.
The Bobcats (6-5, 2-2 CAC) trailed by 10 at halftime and by 17, 40-23, early in the second half but didn't back down and used some timely three-pointers to claw back into the contest.
Wesley (5-6, 3-1 CAC), which led 33-23 at halftime, built its lead to 40-23 after scoring seven points inside the first 1:19 of the second period. Frostburg answered with three three-pointers in its next four baskets to cut the deficit to eight, 42-34 at 15:12.
FSU, which was 0-for-7 from three-point range in the first half, found its rhythm in the second when junior Nick Smoot splashed a three at 18:00. Smoot hit another trey 27 seconds later and senior Jabari Kamau knocked down a three at 15:12 as the Bobcats trailed 42-34.
Frostburg kept on fighting and cut its deficit to six on several occasions midway through the half and a three-pointer from freshman Tyler Michael at 7:46 pulled the visitors to within three, 57-54.
The Wolverines increased their lead to five with just over three minutes to play, but junior Breon Powell hit a jumper with 2:11 left to make it 63-60.
However, both teams went cold from that point on as neither made a field goal the rest of the way. Junior David Patrick missed a three-pointer with five seconds left that would have tied the contest and Wesley's Jordan Johnson made a free throw in the final seconds to seal the 64-60 victory.
Frostburg shot 46.4 percent (13-of-28) in the second half, including a 5-for-9 (55.6%) effort from beyond the arc during its rally. FSU couldn't overcome nine first-half baskets.
Smoot led Frostburg with 13 points and five assists. He also finished with seven of the Bobcats' 13 steals. It's the second time in two seasons that Smoot has picked seven steals in a game. Kamau posted 11 points and 13 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and Powell contributed 11 points.
Anthony Bowers led the Wolverines with 17 points, while Wayne Lennon scored 11. Johnson's late free throw lifted him to 10 points for the game.
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday when they host St. Mary's at 8:00 pm.
