FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior Jerel Carter scored a season-high 34 points and Frostburg State pulled away for an 83-67 win over York (Pa.), Wednesday.
The Bobcats snapped a four-game losing skid with the win and evened their record at 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the CAC. And they did behind three-point shooting and a feisty defensive effort.
Frostburg finished 13-of-28 (46.4%) from beyond the arc, the second most three-pointers in a game in program history. And at the other end, the Bobcats forced 23 York turnovers that led to 23 points.
Carter not only led the way in scoring, but he tied a school record with eight steals and tied another record for free throw percentage after finishing a perfect 11-of-11. He added five three-pointers, seven rebounds and five assists.
While the Bobcats earned a 16-point win, the outcome wasn't in hand until late in the second half. A key flagrant foul was called on York with 4:16 left in the game with Frostburg leading 63-59. Sophomore Sam Smith knocked down both free throws and Carter swished a three-pointer from the corner on the ensuing possession as FSU's lead swelled to 67-59.
Junior Nick Smoot hit a layup with 2:53 to go to give the Bobcats a 72-62 lead and they coasted from there. Frostburg outscored the Spartans 20-8 following the flagrant foul behind three three-pointers and a 10-of-12 effort from beyond the arc.
York (3-11, 2-5 CAC) outrebounded Frostburg 43-25, had four players in double figures and led by as many as 12 points in the first half.
However, Frostburg's defensive effort held the Spartans to just 29 second-half points and 29.0 percent shooting.
Smoot finished with 21 points, including four three-pointers. Combined, Carter and Smoot scored 55 points, knocked down nine of the team's 13 three-pointers and handed out 10 assists. Freshman Tyler Michael finished with nine points behind three three-pointers.
York was led in scoring by Dalton Myers with 15 points, while Blake Straitman scored 10 points with 11 rebounds.
Frostburg returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Salisbury at 3:00 pm.
