FSU Endures Tough Home Loss To W&J

FROSTBURG, Md. – Washington & Jefferson used a pair of three-run innings to earn a 6-4 victory over Frostburg State, Friday afternoon.

The Bobcats (26-12) outhit the Presidents (25-12) 12-5, with 10 of those hits coming over the first four innings of play. Senior Dylan Shupe and junior Ricky Castro each drove home a run in the fourth as Frostburg surged to a 4-3 lead.
 
However, Frostburg posted just two hits over the final five innings and stranded nine men on base. In the top of the sixth, Washington & Jefferson posted its second three-run frame to assume a 6-4 advantage. Tyler Schultz broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run single to right field.
 
Shupe led the Bobcats at the plate with a 4-for-5 effort that included two RBI and a run scored. He gave Frostburg an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when he singled home Castro on a single to center.
 
The Presidents answered with three runs in the top of the third for a 3-1 edge, before sophomore Zach Keeler grounded into a double play in the bottom of the inning that allowed Shupe to score and narrow the gap to 3-2.
 
Shupe and Castro gave the hosts the lead in the fourth before W&J's three-run sixth.
 
Bobcat starter Ryan Redinger suffered the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) in 6.0 innings. Sophomore Nick Huff tossed the final 3.0 innings and allowed just two hits.
 
Tim Mulvey earned the win after throwing 4.0 innings in relief of starter Joe Vita, while Kyle McLain picked up the save. Schultz finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored at the plate.
 
Frostburg State plays Stevenson tomorrow at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Md. at 3:00 pm.
