Offense Propels Baseball To DH Sweep Of Pitt-Greensburg

FROSTBURG, Md. – A strong offensive performance powered the Frostburg State baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Pitt-Greensburg on Thursday. FSU took game one, 13-8, and game two, 12-4.

Frostburg (26-11) was able to pound out 25 runs and 24 hits combined in its victories over UPG (18-18).

FSU rallied from a four-run deficit in game one to come back and seize control. Anthony Maroadi drove in two runs with a double to left center for UPG in a five-run third that made the score 6-2. Frostburg immediately responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of RBIs from juniors Kam Stewart and Ricky Brady. FSU tacked on another run in the fourth bring the score to 6-5.

After Pitt-Greensburg tacked on two runs in the fifth to take an 8-5 lead, Frostburg took control of the game with four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Senior Brandon Remalia delivered the game-tying hit in the fifth with a bases-loaded single that brought home Brady and senior Rob Jennings, and sophomore Zach Keeler scored on a throwing error on the play. In the sixth, Jennings and junior Ricky Castro picked up two-run singles to cement the FSU victory.

Sophomore Kyle McCormack improved his record to 1-1 for Frostburg as he came on in relief to allow just two runs, three hits, and strike out four in four innings of work.

Frostburg once again used its last two at-bats in game two to secure the victory. Both teams scored two runs in the first and the score remained knotted at two until the bottom of the fifth.

Castro and senior Kevin Kean each picked up RBI triples in the three-run fifth to help Frostburg take the 5-2 advantage. UPG countered with two runs in the sixth to get within one run, but FSU put the game to rest in the bottom of the sixth.

Frostburg touched home seven times in the sixth and scored all of the runs while only recording two hits in the inning. Keeler closed out the scoring in the game with a bases-loaded double that cleared the bases and brought the score to where it would end, 12-4.

Freshman Ryan Callahan started for FSU and delivered a fine performance. Callahan (3-1) pitched six innings and allowed four runs, seven hits, and picked up two strikeouts.

FSU was led offensively on the day by junior Zach Weiss who went a combined 6-for-8 with three doubles, four runs, and an RBI. Castro went 4-for-7 with a double and a triple, six RBIs, and two runs, while Brady went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs, and two RBIs.

Frostburg returns to action tomorrow when it hosts La Roche at 1:00 pm and Washington & Jefferson at 4:30 pm at Bob Wells Field.
