Bobcats Drop Conference Tilt With No. 24 York (Pa.)

YORK, Pa. – For the first time all season the Frostburg State baseball team has dropped three games in a row after falling to No. 24 York (Pa.) by a score of 13-6, Wednesday.

Box Score

The Bobcats (19-8, 9-5 CAC) did jump out to the early lead over the Capital Athletic Conference-leading Spartans (18-3, 13-1) with single runs in the first and third innings. Senior Kevin Kean came through with an RBI single up the middle in the first, and fellow senior Dylan Shupe delivered a run-scoring double to left center in the third.

Senior Kenny Georgius started the game on the mound for Frostburg, but was only able to pitch two scoreless innings after throwing a nine-inning complete game on Sunday. York's offense went off after Georgius left the game, as Frostburg went through five more pitchers to complete the game and they all surrendered at least two runs.

The Spartans struck for two runs in the third to tie the game, and then blew the game open with back-to-back four-run innings in the fifth and sixth. In the fifth, Colin Porter delivered the big hit with a two-run single to center that extended York's lead to 6-2. The big blow in the sixth came from the bat of Colbe Herr who delivered a three-run home run to right field that pushed the advantage to eight runs.

After the Spartans tacked on another run in the seventh, the Bobcats tried to fight their way back into the game with four runs in the eight. Junior Kam Stewart picked up a sacrifice fly for FSU's third run of the day. The next batter was junior Ricky Brady, who came up with two runners on and belted his team-leading fourth home run of the season to right field.

York added two more in the eight and the Bobcats were unable to muster any offense in the ninth as they fell by a final of 13-6.

Freshman Ryan Callahan (1-1) was handed the loss for FSU after surrendering four runs and five hits in two-thirds of an inning. Dan Gurganus improved to 5-0 for York after allowing six runs and 11 hits, and collecting five strikeouts in 7.2 innings.

The bright spot on the day for the Frostburg offense was the performance of freshman JT Tipton. Tipton posted a 4-for-5 day at the plate and also scored two runs. Kean was the only other Bobcat to record multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Frostburg will look to get back in the win column when it travels to face Penn State Altoona tomorrow at 3:00 pm.
