FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team looked to be headed for an important doubleheader sweep of Capital Athletic Conference opponent Christopher Newport after taking game one, 2-1, and leading game two, 5-3, heading into the top of the ninth. Unfortunately, FSU was unable to hold onto the lead and fell to CNU 9-5 in game two to earn a split, Sunday.
Box ScoresGame 1Game 2Game one turned out to be a pitcher's duel between the Bobcats (19-6, 9-4 CAC) and the Captains (17-12, 9-4 CAC) and Frostburg was able to capture the win behind the efforts of senior Kenny Georgius.
Georgius improved to 5-0 and was nearly unhittable on the afternoon. In the nine-inning complete game effort, he surrendered just one run, four hits, and struck out seven. The only run for CNU came in the opening frame when Tommy Vitaletti led off the game with a triple and scored the Captain's lone run on an RBI groundout from Billy Steel. Georgius threw up zeroes for the remainder of the contest, but he was nearly matched by the effort of the Captain's starter, Bryan Bierlein (4-3). Bierlein threw an eight-inning complete game and allowed just two runs (one earned), eight hits, and posted 10 strikeouts.
The Bobcats trailed early but were able to tie the game in the fourth when senior Kevin Kean led off with a double to right center and the next batter, senior Dylan Shupe, drove him home with a single. FSU took the lead for good in the seventh. With two outs, junior Nick McElfish reached third base on a three-base error from the Captain's right fielder. Senior Brandon Remalia then came through with the clutch RBI single up the middle.
In game two, Frostburg was in control for nearly the entire contest. The Bobcats put up two runs in both the second and third innings. McElfish drove home a run in the second with a double to left center, and Kean and Shupe recorded back-to-back RBI doubles in the third. CNU countered with one run in the third and two in the fourth off FSU starter, junior Ryan Redinger. Redinger left the game in line for a win, but finished with a no decision after allowing three runs (two earned), seven hits, and striking out seven in six-plus innings of work.
The Bobcats tacked on an insurance run in the fifth when junior Ricky Brady picked up an RBI single to left. That made the score 5-3, which held all the way until the ninth when things imploded.
The Captains plated six runs and collected five hits in the inning to take the decisive 9-5 advantage. Jacob Houston delivered the game-tying run with a single through the left side, and later in the inning A.J. Nicely gave the Captains the lead for good with a two-run double to left field.
Sophomore Zach Lawhorn fell to 0-1 for the Bobcats, while Kyle Goddard improved to 1-0 for the Captains.
Offensively for the Bobcats, Kean posted a 3-for-7 day with three runs scored, an RBI, and two walks. Junior Kam Stewart went a combined 3-for-6 with a run scored, two walks, and two stolen bases.
