FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team plated three runs in the ninth to force extras, but ultimately fell to Capital Athletic Conference-foe York (Pa.) by a score of 7-6 in 10 innings, Tuesday.
Box Score
The Bobcats (15-5, 5-3 CAC) were leading for the majority of the game over the Spartans (12-2, 8-0 CAC), but the Frostburg bullpen surrendered five runs in the eighth inning to give YC a 5-2 lead. The big blow in the inning was a three-run home run from Colbe Herr which gave York the lead for the first time in the game.
The two teams traded single runs in the bottom of the eighth and the top of the ninth to make the score 6-3 when the Bobcats came to bat in the ninth. Sophomore Connor Cooper led the inning off with a walk and senior Brandon Remalia followed up with a single down the left field line. Junior Zach Weiss drove the first run in with a single up the middle, and junior Ricky Castro loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Remalia touched home for the fifth Bobcat run off of a single to left field from senior Kevin Kean. The bases remained loaded for senior Dylan Shupe, who brought home Weiss with a sacrifice fly to right for the tying run. After an intentional walk to junior Kam Stewart, the Bobcats had the bases loaded with one out and the winning run at third base. Unfortunately, the next two batters recorded outs and the game headed to extras.
York was able to regain the lead with two outs in the 10th. Logan Countryman had singled through the right side and proceeded to steal second base, but no Bobcat covered second for the throw so Countryman was able to advance to third with two outs. He then scored to give the Spartans a 7-6 lead when Colin Porter picked up an infield hit on a dribbler down the third base line. The run proved to be the game winner for York.
The game started off as a pitcher's duel which Frostburg starter, senior Kenny Georgius, got the better of. Georgius pitched seven shutout innings while allowing just three hits and striking out five, and left the game in line for the win. Elliot Mortimer started for the Spartans and allowed just two runs in seven innings, while surrendering eight hits and posting five strikeouts. Both pitchers ended up with no decisions.
Stephen Miele improved to 3-1 on the season for York as he came on to record three outs in the ninth. Tyler Alexander recorded the save for the Spartans with a scoreless tenth.
Junior Rob Warwick fell to 0-1 on the season after he surrendered one unearned run in the 10th.
Offensively the Bobcats outhit the Spartans 15-11 and had seven players record at least one hit. Castro, Kean and Remalia all posted three hits on the day. Kean led FSU with two RBIs and Weiss and Cooper each scored twice to pace the team.
Frostburg gets right back to action tomorrow when it hosts Mary Washington at 3:00 pm at Bob Wells Field.
