Game 2
Coming into their conference opener, the Bobcats (7-2, 0-2 CAC) had won seven straight non-conference games to open the season. Frostburg looked to be in control of game one, as it led for the majority of the contest, but Salisbury (8-2, 2-0 CAC) was able to come from behind in the bottom of the eighth snag the game away from FSU.
Senior Kenny Georgius pitched to a no decision for the Bobcats after five solid innings, giving up only five hits and two runs, while striking out three.
FSU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third with a pair of two-out RBI singles. Senior Dylan Shupe brought home fellow senior Brandon Remalia, who led off the inning with a double, with a single down the right-field line. Senior Kevin Kean, who reached on one of his two walks in the game, then came home on an infield single off the bat of senior Rob Jennings.
After the Sea Gulls had pulled one back in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly, the Bobcats picked up their final run of game one in the fifth. Junior Ricky Castro led off the inning with a single to right field and then advanced to third on another single to right field by Shupe. Castro then advanced home on a wild pitch.
SU answered with another run in the bottom of the inning when Georgius issued a bases loaded walk to senior Ken O'Neill.
Sophomore Kyle McCormack came on for Frostburg in the sixth to relieve Georgius and pitched two scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits and posting one strikeout.
Heading to the bottom of the eighth, FSU was only six outs away from extending their unbeaten start to the season, but a few miscues proved costly. Shupe came in to pitch for Frostburg in the eighth to try to maintain the lead. However, with two outs SU had runners on the corners, and junior Kyle Hayman stole second base, but an errant throw from the catcher allowed the Gulls to tie the game as senior Bill Root came in to score and Hayman advanced to third. Then, a wild pitch from Shupe brought home Hayman and what turned out to be the winning run for Salisbury.
Junior Dan Fein pitched eight innings, allowing three runs and striking out four, to improve to 3-0 for Salisbury. Shupe fell to 0-1 for Frostburg.
On offense, Shupe was the only Bobcat with multiple hits in the first game, as he went 3-for-4 with the one RBI.
In game two, the Sea Gulls took an insurmountable lead after scoring 13 unanswered runs in the first four innings, including eight in the third.
The Bobcats picked up three runs in the fifth, as Remalia picked up an RBI double to left center and junior Zach Weiss picked up an RBI with an infield single. FSU picked up one more unearned run in the fifth and another unearned run in the sixth to finish their scoring for the game.
The Bobcats went through seven pitchers to complete the game, surrendering 19 runs (18 earned), 20 hits and 11 walks.
Sophomore Logan Hunt (1-1) started for FSU, and picked up the loss after allowing four runs in two-plus innings. Junior Brett Collacchi improved to 4-0 for SU after pitching six innings, allowing only two earned runs, and posting six strikeouts.
On offense for the Bobcats, juniors Kam Stewart and Nick McElfish each finished 2-for-2 in the second game. Remalia went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Frostburg will get right back to conference action when it travels to face Mary Washington on Wednesday, Mar. 12 at 3:00 pm.
