WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Frostburg State baseball team's offense was held in check on Sunday as it fell to Gallaudet by a score of 3-1.
Box Score
Offensively, the Bobcats (13-4) were held to a season low in runs (1), hits (5), and extra-base hits (0) by the Bison (11-7). FSU was unable to take advantage of an excellent outing from its starter, freshman Ryan Callahan.
Callahan allowed only two hits, one run, one walk, and struck out three in 6.1 innings of work. He held Gallaudet scoreless for the first six frames before being charged for one run in the seventh and ending up with a no decision. A pitcher's duel ensued between Callahan and GU's starter Danny O'Donnell.
O'Donnell improved to 3-1 on the season after holding the potent Bobcat offense in check. He surrendered one run in the first and that was all he would allow as he would complete seven innings of work while allowing five hits and posting five strikeouts.
Frostburg plated its only run of the game in the first with one out as senior Dylan Shupe singled to left field to drive home junior Ricky Castro who had reached on a walk. The Bobcats would threaten several other times, but couldn't get the big hits as they stranded nine runners on base.
That one run lead would hold for Frostburg all the way until the bottom of the seventh. Things came undone as FSU pitching allowed four hits and three runs in the inning, while the defense also committed two errors. Mitchell Bensman tied the game for the Bison with an RBI single to center, and Justin Strong doubled in what turned out to be the winning run for GU.
Brandon Holsworth shut the door on any possible FSU comeback, as he picked up the save by allowing zero hits and striking out four in the final two innings for the Bison.
For the Bobcats, Shupe was the only player to get multiple hits with a 2-for-4 day with the only RBI. Castro, senior Brandon Remalia, and junior Zach Weiss each recorded a single hit for FSU.
Senior Austin Poretz (2-1) picked up the loss for Frostburg, as he allowed two runs (one earned) in two-thirds of an inning worked. Sophomore Kyle McCormack came in to pitch a scoreless ninth inning, allowing only one hit.
Frostburg will look to get back in the win column when its hosts Southern Virginia for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 2:00 pm.
