Mary Washington Pulls Away For Win At Frostburg

FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior Malory Brunett scored three goals and the Frostburg State women's lacrosse team hung tough in the first half of play but Mary Washington posted a big second half for a 22-6 win over the Bobcats, Saturday afternoon.

Mary Washington (6-2, 1-0 CAC) scored within the first minute of play, but Brunett struck right back at 24:15 to put the Bobcats (1-8, 0-2 CAC) on the board and knotted the game at 1-1.

UMW strung together three more goals over the next six minutes, but Frostburg kept the gap close, bringing the game within just one goal on three separate occasions.

The visitors held a slim one-goal lead with just three minutes left in the first half, but with just under two minutes to play, the Eagles found the net three more times before the period ended for a 10-6 halftime lead.

Frostburg was stifled in the second half as the Eagles scored 12 unanswered goals in the final frame. Senior Jenna Petrucelli and junior Corinne Wiederkehr led the charge, scoring three goals each during the spurt.

Brunett completed her hat trick, along with causing two turnovers and seizing nine draw controls for the Bobcats. Freshman Megan Hart contributed two goals on just three shots while sophomore Marissa Howk rounded out the scoring with a goal of her own.

On the defensive side of the ball, freshman Alyssa Barlow caused a game-high three turnovers while classmate Emani Byrd caused two turnovers and scooped up three ground balls.

Petrucelli and junior Emily Atkinson finished with five goals each to lead UMW, while three other Eagles scored three goals a piece.

Bobcat sophomore keeper Heather Lowe collected seven saves in the loss, while Eagle goalie Kelly Dean needed just four saves for the win.

Frostburg continues its four-game home stint as it hosts Anne Arundel Community College on Wednesday, Mar. 26 at 7:00 pm.
