ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team put together a complete team performance as it never trailed in a doubleheader sweep of St. Mary's (Md.), Saturday. FSU took game one, 10-0, and game two, 7-2.
The Bobcat offense erupted for 17 runs on 34 hits to help improve their overall record to 10-2 and their Capital Athletic Conference record to 3-2.
In each game eight different Frostburg players recorded at least one hit. Junior Ricky Castro finished the day 6-for-10 with five runs scored and three RBIs, while senior All-American Kevin Kean finished 6-for-9 with two runs and one RBI. Junior Zach Weiss went 5-for-12 on the day with three runs and two RBIs. Fellow junior Kam Stewart posted a 5-for-10 afternoon with a double, two triples, two runs, and three RBIs. Senior Rob Jennings led the Bobcats with four RBIs on a 4-for-7 day.
In game one, Frostburg jumped on top of the Seahawks (7-7, 3-4 CAC) in the first with two runs. Jennings delivered the blow with a two-out single to center that plated Castro and Kean.
Those runs would be more than enough for the Bobcat's starter, Kenny Georgius, who continued his great start to the season to improve to 3-0. Georgius was dominating, as he pitched seven shutout innings, while allowing only four hits, one walk, and recording three strikeouts.
FSU continued to extend its lead with single runs in the third and eighth, two in the seventh, and it put the game completely out of reach with four in the ninth. Weiss delivered the big blow in the ninth with a two-run RBI single to left field that scored sophomore Zach Keeler and junior Ricky Brady. Brady and Stewart also contributed RBI hits in the inning.
Sophomore Zach Lawhorn and freshman Jake Stephens combine to pitch the eighth and ninth innings for the Bobcats, and complete the shutout.
Michael O'Neill fell to 2-2 on the season for St. Mary's after surrendering three runs in five innings. Alex Lenovitz was the only Seahawk to record multiple hits, as he went 2-for-4 in game one.
Game two was a little closer than game one, but it was another game that was dominated by the Bobcats as they outhit St. Mary's 18-4, with the 18 being a new season-high.
Frostburg took an initial 1-0 advantage in the third, off of a Castro RBI single, but the Seahawks answered with one of their own in the fourth off of an RBI single from Jared Eaker.
The Bobcats took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. Senior Dylan Shupe picked up an RBI single to right in the fifth and an RBI walk in the sixth. Brady plated the other run with a fielder's choice RBI in the fifth.
Junior Ryan Redinger turned in a dominating pitching performance of his own for Frostburg, as he improved to 3-0 on the season to match Georgius. Redinger also matched Georgius' seven innings pitched, while he surrendered just two hits, one run, and struck out three.
FSU secured the game with two insurance runs in the eighth and one in the ninth. Shupe knocked in his third RBI of the game in the eighth with a single to center, and Jennings followed with a sacrifice fly. In the ninth, Keeler drove Stewart home with a single to left after Stewart had led off the inning with a triple to left center.
Patrick Watson (1-1) picked up the loss for the Seahawks in game two. Watson pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowed four runs (three earned) and struck out two batters.
The Bobcats return to conference action when they host their first home game of the season on Wednesday against York (Pa.) at 3:00 pm at Bob Wells Field.
