FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Frostburg State posted its fourth-straight win, Wednesday, with a 72-69 victory over Mary Washington, but the Eagles didn't make it easy in the closing minutes.
The Bobcats (4-2, 1-0 CAC) led by as many as 20 points on three occasions in the second half, but the Eagles (0-5, 0-1) used a 20-4 run to close to within four points with just 1:09 to play.
Both teams struggled at the foul line down the stretch, but Frostburg survived the late flurry when junior Jerel Carter stole a pass and made a free throw with seven seconds left to help seal the victory.
Frostburg shot 45.0 percent (27-of-60) from the floor and outrebounded UMW, 42-37.
In the first half, Frostburg rallied from an early six-point deficit wen junior Shawn Henson hit a layup at 12:30 to knot the game at 16 apiece. Frostburg slowly took control of the half and led by 10 at the break, 43-33, thanks to a pair of free throws from Henson with 48 seconds to go.
The second half appeared in Frostburg's control as it built its lead to 20, 67-47, when junior Nick Smoot hit a jumper with 6:53 to play in regulation. From there, Mary Washington collected a 20-4 scoring jolt that pulled it within four, 71-67 with just over a minute to play.
Carter's steal and free throw pushed Frostburg's lead to 72-67 with just seven seconds left and Taylor Johnson made a layup with one second left for Mary Washington to set the final score at 72-69.
Freshman Tyler Michael came off the bench to lead the Bobcats with 16 points, including a game-high three 3-pointers. Senior Jabari Kamau led Frostburg starters with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Mary Washington finished with three players in double-figures as Eric Shaw totaled a game-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting (66.6%).
FSU returns to action this Saturday when it hosts Christopher Newport at 3:00 pm.
Notes: During its winning streak, Frostburg is shooting 45.1 percent from the floor (106-of-235) and is averaging nearly 76 points per contest … It's the first four-game winning streak for the Bobcats since 2009-10.
