FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg hit a pair of timely baskets and knocked down six free throws in the closing minutes to outlast visiting Penn State Harrisburg for a 70-66 victory, Wednesday.
The game featured 10 lead changes and six ties, but Frostburg shot 46.5 percent from the floor and used a late surge to push its record to 5-3 overall (2-1 CAC).
After suffering an injury early in the second half, senior Jabari Kamau returned to the contest with 3:22 left in the game and made an immediate impact. Eight seconds after stepping back onto the court, Kamau hit a layup that tied the ball game for the sixth and final time.
Kamau hit another layup with just 1:04 showing to push the Bobcat lead back to three, 63-60, and his final layup came with 25 seconds left that increased the advantage to 68-63.
Frostburg finished 23-of-49 from the floor (46.9%) and overcame a 1-of-11 effort from beyond the three-point line. FSU outrebounded Penn State Harrisburg, 44-29, and had three starters in double figures.
Despite Kamau's late scoring surge, the junior tandem of Nick Smoot and Jerel Carter tied for the team lead with 13 points each. Carter finished 9-of-10 from the foul line, including an 8-for-8 effort in the second half. Junior Torrell Goodman added 10 points and six rebounds, while Kamau finished with nine points, behind a perfect 4-of-4 shooting.
The Bobcats led by as many as seven points early in the second half, but the Lions (5-3, 2-1 CAC) rebounded for a six-point cushion, 51-45, behind an 18-5 run. Junior Torrell Goodman hit a layup at 7:09 that tied the ballgame at 54-54, but PSH led by four, 58-54, with 5:30 to play.
Nick Seefeldt scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Lions followed by Arick Sodini with 12 points.
Frostburg returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 20 when it travels to the Rotary Holiday Classic at Hood College. The Bobcats will square off with the host Blazers in the first round at 8:00 pm.
