Bobcats Roll Past 13th-Ranked Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. – Three players scored in double figures and Frostburg State led from start to finish in a 76-67 upset of 13th-ranked Randolph-Macon, Sunday afternoon.

The Bobcats, winners of three straight, led by 14 points in the first half and increased their lead to 15 late in the second half as they improved their overall record to 3-2.

"We came out aggressively and played great defense from the very start," said Bobcat head coach Webb Hatch. "We created some problems with our team quickness and defensive play."

Junior Nick Smoot hit the game's opening basketball and the Bobcats collected a 16-5 run over 5:20 in the first half to hold a 24-10 lead just under nine minutes into play.

"We got up early and we didn't back down," added Hatch. "We shot 50 percent from the field and we played with a lot of aggression on defense. I'm very proud of the way our guys played today."

The Yellow Jackets (3-2) inched their way back into the game late in the first half and trailed by just two, 34-32 at the break.

However, Frostburg opened the second half the way it did the first with another run that again seized the momentum.

After Randolph-Macon cut the deficit to 41-40 at 17:44 on a Joe Hassell free throw, Frostburg collected a 13-2 scoring jolt to extend its lead to 54-42 with 15:16 to play. Senior Jabari Kamau accounted for three baskets during the outburst.

The hosts cut the deficit to five points twice, but Frostburg collected a 10-0 run that ended with 4:59 showing on the clock to seal the victory.

In his third start-consecutive start, junior Breon Powell led the way in both scoring and rebounding. He finished with 15 points, including a pair of three-pointers and a game-high eight rebounds.

"I thought Breon played really well today for us," said Hatch. "He shot the ball very well and I think his quickness, mainly his first step, created problems for their defense."

Smoot, the team's leading scorer, finished with 13 points, five assists and three steals, while senior Tyler Campbell added 12 points and six rebounds.

Frostburg shot a season-high 50.8 percent (31-of-61) from the field and outrebounded the Yellow Jackets, 37-28.

Hassell led all players with 18 points for Randolph-Macon, while Chris Hamilton finished with 14.

FSU returns to action on Wednesday when it opens Capital Athletic Conference action at Mary Washington at 8:00 pm.
