FROSTBURG, Md. – The lead changed hands just once in Saturday's non-conference men's basketball tilt between Frostburg and Randolph. And that's just fine for head coach Webb Hatch and company as the Bobcats rallied past Randolph for a 70-58 win.
FSU (1-2) trailed by 10 in the first half, by 13 early in the second half and scored just 30 points through 26:40 of action.
The Bobcat offense then came alive to the tune of 40 points over the final 13:19 behind a barrage of three-pointers and momentum that kept Randolph (1-1) from making a late surge. FSU freshman Zachary Coalmon spearheaded a defensive effort that held the Wildcats to 25.6 percent shooting (10-of-39) in the second half, including just 3-of-17 (17.6%) from beyond the arc. In just his third collegiate game, Coalmon smashed Frostburg's single-game record for bocks with 10, including seven in the decisive second half.
Meanwhile, the Bobcats made just eight baskets in the first half but erupted for eight three-pointers and 12-of-24 shooting (50.0%) in the second stanza. Freshman Tyler Michael and junior Nick Smoot combined for 12 three-points and 51 of the team's 70 points. The duo each made six three-pointers, just one shy of tying a school record and they each scored 16 points in the second half.
Michael finished with a game-high 27 points, while all six of his baskets came from beyond the arc. He was also a perfect 9-of-9 from the foul line. Smoot added 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting (57.1%).
Frostburg junior David Patrick made just one basket in 20 minutes of play, but it couldn't have come at a better time. With the Bobcats trailing by 12 with 12:53 showing in the second half, Frostburg collected a 16-2 run that grabbed the only lead change of the contest and handed it a 49-47 lead at 9:26. Smoot scored eight points during the outburst and Patrick drained a three-pointed that handed the Bobcats the lead for good.
FSU kept its foot on the gas and with 4:41 left, Michael knocked down another three-pointer that put the hosts up 60-49. Junior Shawn Henson hit a layup at 2:31 to give Frostburg it largest lead of the afternoon at 13 points, 62-49.
Frostburg hosts Waynesburg this Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
