FROSTBURG, Md. – Catholic spoiled Frostburg's home opener, Tuesday, after scoring the game's first seven points and never letting up in a 68-49 win.
The Bobcats, who fell to 0-2 with the loss, pulled to within 12-10 with 14:06 showing in the opening half. Senior James Peters hit a three-pointer and classmate Jabari Kamau made a layup as Frostburg pulled to within two.
However, the Cardinals (1-1) closed out the first half on a 28-10 run for a 40-22 edge at the break. Catholic grabbed a 19-point lead in the opening minutes of the second half and led by as many as 23 in the closing minutes of regulation.
Freshman Tyler Michael and junior Nick Smoot hit back-to-back three-pointers for the Bobcats as they pulled to within 55-42, just past the midway point of the second half. Minutes later, FSU pulled to within 14, 59-45, but CUA collected a 9-0 run to seal the victory.
Smoot led all Bobcat players with 12 points, followed by Kamau with 10. Junior Shawn Henson and senior Tyler Campbell paced the team with seven boards.
Catholic was led in scoring by Bryson Fonville with 29 points behind 10-of-22 (45.4%). Jay Howard posted a double-double 17 points and 12 rebounds and Catholic shot 37.9 percent from the field.
FSU returns to action this Saturday when it hosts Randolph College at 2:00 pm.
