Bobcats Fall To Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. – Freshman Amanda Snowden led the Frostburg State volleyball team with eight kills on the evening, but Southern Virginia was too much for FSU to handle as the Knights defeated the Bobcats 3-0 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

After a back-and-forth start to the opening set, SVU took control with a 6-1 run that featured three Knight service aces to give the hosts a 16-9 advantage. Trailing 20-12, the Bobcats (13-16, 3-5 CAC) chipped away at the SVU lead with their own 5-1 run that was highlighted by three kills from senior Morgan Hoover to pull FSU within two at 20-18. The Knights closed out the set with two straight points to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-20 victory.

Southern Virginia (19-8, 6-2 CAC) took early control of the second set after building a quick 17-6 lead. Frostburg strung together a three-point run and a pair of two-point runs to pull within 23-17, but could not overtake the Knights as SVU took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 win in the second set.

The third set proved to be a much tighter battle than the first two as Frostburg built an 8-4 lead to open it up. Southern Virginia answered back with a 5-0 run to take a 9-8 lead but the Bobcats would not allow SVU to build on its lead. Junior Aimee Petridess and freshman Zoe Harris went back-to-back with a pair of kills before Harris combined with freshman Jessica Bugtong for a block to give FSU an 11-9 lead. As they have all match, the Knights went on a quick run, however, and took a 17-11 lead over Frostburg. It was the Bobcats' turn, however, to go on a run and battled back to pull within one point at 19-18. After the two teams traded three pairs of serves, and the Knights earned their first match point at 24-22, Petrides kept the hope of a fourth set alive for Frostburg with her fourth kill of the match but the Knights were able to hold on and close out the match at 25-23 to earn the 3-0 victory.

Freshman Naya Cheatem and Hoover each chipped in six kills with Snowden's eight while freshman Madelyn Torres handed out 16 assists on the day. Freshman Lindsey Scepura paced the defense with 11 kills.

Frostburg State will close out its regular season in a key CAC tilt against Salisbury at Bobcat Arena at 1:00 pm on Saturday. The winner of the match will earn the sixth and final seed in the upcoming CAC tournament.
