FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior Morgan Hoover finished her last game for Frostburg State volleyball with a team-leading 10 kills but it wasn't enough as Salisbury spoiled Senior Day with a 3-0 victory by set scores of 25-12, 25-13, 25-27, Saturday afternoon.
Hoover led the Bobcats (13-17, 3-6 CAC) in kills while freshman Naya Cheatem was close behind with nine on the day. Salisbury (20-9, 5-4 CAC) was led by sophomore Katie Stouffer with 14 kills while freshman Shannon Russell chipped in 10.
The Sea Gulls jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the opening set and used that momentum to carry SU to a 25-13 win. Hoover broke up a three-point and four-point run by the Sea Gulls with a pair of kills but Salisbury closed out the set with five-straight points to secure the win.
After Salisbury built an 11-6 lead in the second set, a Sea Gull ball handling error gave the serve back to Frostburg and freshman Madelyn Torres served two-straight points to cut the SU lead to 11-8. After a Sea Gull 7-1 run, Salisbury built its lead to 19-10 behind senior Nikki Binetti's serving. Despite a 6-5 run in favor of the Bobcats in the 11 final points, the Sea Gulls held on to win the second set 25-14.
Salisbury once again built an 11-6 lead in the third set but Frostburg would not go quietly and clawed its way back in. Torres served four-straight points for the Bobcats to cut the SU lead to 11-10. After a bad set by Salisbury tied the game at 12-12, the score was tied 10 times before Salisbury earned its first match point after a Frostburg attack error. Hoover kept the match alive with her eighth kill of the afternoon to bring the score to 24-23 in favor of SU. Hoover's ninth kill of the match tied it at 24 but a FSU service error gave the ball back to Salisbury. Hoover once again tied the match with her 10
th kill of the day at 25-25, but SU closed out with two-straight points to take the set and match with a 27-25 victory.
Defensively, the Bobcats were led by freshman Lindsey Scepura with nine digs while Torres handed out 23 assists. The Sea Gulls were led by senior Michelle Meehan with 15 digs while freshman Rachel Pierson dished out 20 assists on the afternoon.
Frostburg State wraps up the 2014 season with a 13-17 record and a 3-6 slate in the CAC.
