DOVER, Del. – The Frostburg State volleyball team posted a 3-0 win over Capital Athletic Conference opponent, Wesley, Saturday morning for its second-straight conference sweep.
The Bobcats (12-14, 2-3 CAC) jumped out to a quick 10-5 lead in the opening set and used that momentum to carry them to a 25-10 victory to kick off the match. Freshman setter Madelyn Torres opened a string of five-straight serves with a service ace to give FSU a 14-8 lead over Wesley (11-11, 1-4 CAC) before the two teams traded service errors to bring the score to 19-9. With freshman Lindsey Scepura at the service line and leading 23-10, the Bobcats benefited for two-straight hitting errors by the Wolverines to close out the set.
The second set remained much tighter throughout the first half as neither team held more than a three-point lead until Frostburg's junior Tiffany Rohrer served three-straight points to give FSU a 17-12 lead. After a kill from Torres to make the score 18-13, the Bobcats maintained control for the remaining nine points and took a 2-0 set lead with a 25-15 win.
In the final set, the lead changed hands five times and the set was tied seven times before Frostburg finally broke away with a 6-2 run late in the final game. With the score tied 18-18, the Bobcats once again were benefactors of two Welsey hitting errors and a kill from senior Morgan Hoover and took a 20-18 lead. After a Wolverine service error gave the ball back to Frostburg, Hoover finished out the set with her 40
th service ace of the year to give FSU a 25-20 victory to close out the match.
Hoover led all players with seven kills while freshman Naya Cheatem was close behind with six. Torres dished out 25 assists on the afternoon and Scepura posted a team-high nine digs.
The Bobcats will look for their third-straight CAC victory when they host York (Pa.) on Oct. 22 at 7:00 pm.
