FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team pushed its winning streak to three matches as the Bobcats swept visiting Capital Athletic Conference foe, York (Pa.), in three sets, Wednesday evening.
The win for Frostburg pushes the Bobcats to 13-14 on the year while evening their CAC slate at 3-3 while York (Pa.) drops to 9-19 on the season and 2-4 in the conference.
After a seesaw start to the match in which the score was tied eight times and the lead changed hands three times, Frostburg State pulled away from the Spartans with a 6-2 run to take a 16-12 lead in the first set. Reigning ECAC Rookie of the Week, Madelyn Torres, led the Bobcats through that run with seven strong serves, including an ace. Frostburg held off the Spartans for the remainder of the set to come away with a 25-19 victory to open the match.
Torres opened the second set at the service line and served the Bobcats to a 4-0 lead. The Spartans fought their way back into the set with a 9-8 battle to pull within three at 12-9, but a kill from junior Aimee Petrides ended the run and gave Frostburg back the serve. After the two teams traded a pair of points, it was Petrides' turn to put the set out of reach from the Spartans at the service line. Petrides served five-straight points to give FSU a 20-12 lead. York kept clawing back, however, with three-straight points once the Bobcats earned their set point before FSU benefited from a bad set on the YCP side of the net to end the second game, 25-19.
Frostburg put the match away with a 25-15 victory in the third and final set. With the Bobcats lead 9-8, Petrides served an 8-1 run for FSU, highlighted by two kills from freshman Naya Cheatem. Frostburg seemed to have the match put away with a lead 24-12 lead, but once again the Spartans would not go quietly and scored three straight to bring the score to 25-14 but Petrides ended the match with her 10
th kill of the evening to give FSU the 25-15 win.
Cheatem led all players with 10 kills while Torres handed out 24 assists in the three sets. Freshman Lindsey Scepura led the defense for FSU with 10 digs.
Frostburg looks to continue its CAC winning streak as the Bobcats travel to St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday for a 2:00 pm match.
