FSU Better of the Bobcats, Defeats Pitt-Greensburg 7-4

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Three years removed from competing against Pitt-Greensburg in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, Frostburg State proved that it is still the better of the two Bobcats as it defeated its former conference foe, 7-4.

Box Score

On a chilly day that felt more like January than April, it took Frostburg a few more innings than anticipated to get heated up.

Both offenses were held in check for the first two innings but the Bobcats of Frostburg State would finally breakthrough in the top of the third. An error, a bunt single, and a walk loaded the bases to start the inning and J.K. Filauro would cash in with a two-RBI double over the head of the center fielder to give FSU a 2-0 lead. Rob Jennings would single home another run for Frostburg but Greensburg was able to escape the inning without any further damage.

With the score now 3-0, Greensburg chipped into the lead in its next at-bat, thanks to an RBI single from Dylin Brooks. The Bobcats of Greensburg would also add another run in the fourth to bring the score to 3-2.

Kevin Kean lead off the fifth inning with a single to right field and in doing so extended his hit streak to an impressive 23 games. Kean proceeded to steal second and after Filauro moved him over to third base, the junior center fielder scored on a sacrifice fly from Jennings.

FSU tacked on another run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Brandon Remalia, but Greensburg would once again bring the deficit to within one, thanks to a two-run homer from Steven Zerbini.

Apparently Jennings wasn’t very impressed with the opposition’s home run as he countered with a two-run homer of his own that clanked off of the lone set of left-center bleachers.

Now with a three-run cushion, the Frostburg relievers went to work in the latter innings to seal the deal for the Bobcats.

In a formidable stint out of the bullpen, senior Joe Markiewicz Jr. picked up the win for Frostburg, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings and striking out four. Dylan Shupe got the save, his second of the season, pitching the final two innings of the game without allowing a hit or a run.

Jennings paced the lineup, going 2-for-4 on the day with four RBI. Filauro chipped in with two RBI of his own and Remalia and Shupe had two hits apiece.

Leading the way for Greensburg was center fielder Dan Moyer, who was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate for the home team.

The Frostburg State baseball team is slated to return to action on Thursday when Shenandoah comes into town to battle the Bobcats, but with the imposing weather, a postponement is looking  to be inevitable so stay tuned for further updates.
