Women’s Lacrosse Second Half Comeback Falls Short

FROSTBURG, Md. – Despite a late second half six-goal comeback, the Frostburg State women’s lacrosse team fell to non-conference opponent Goucher, 16-15, on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.

In the defeat, the Bobcats fall to an overall record of 5-8 while the Gophers improve to a .500 record of 7-7.

The first half was a back and forth battle as each team traded the first six goals to knot the score at 3-3. The Gophers strung together a four-goal run, but FSU countered with three scores of its own. Both teams notched two more goals before Goucher claimed the last goal of the half to grab a 10-8 advantage.

As soon as the clock started ticking in the second half, the Gophers went to work to further their lead.  Goucher claimed the first five goals of the half to give them a comfortable 15-8 lead at 23:34.

Six scoreless minutes went by before the Bobcats kicked into action. In the last 17 minutes of regulation, the Bobcats outscored the Gophers 7-1, but time ran out before they could complete the comeback as the final score read 16-15.

The late second half run was propelled by junior Megan White and sophomore Emily Walker who both notched two goals apiece.

White and Walker led the Bobcats with five goals each which is a career-high for Walker and a season-high for White.

Senior Taylor Cassatt filled the stat sheet as she contributed three goals, two assists, three ground balls, eight draw controls and caused two turnovers.

Senior Naomi Swann faced a constant barrage of shot attempts from the Gophers, as she saved nine shots in the process.

Goucher was led by Hannah Khin and Erin Reifsnyder with six and five goals, respectively. Goalkeeper Ashley Shaner earned the win in the net with seven saves.

FSU plays their last non-conference game on Thursday, April 18 as they travel to face Shepherd for a 4:00 pm contest.
