Baseball Splits CAC Doubleheader With York (Pa.)

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team saw an opportunity for its first twinbill sweep of the season but could not capitalize on the momentum gained from the Game 1 gem thrown by senior Doug Politz and subsequently split the day with York, 6-0 and 2-8.

Politz came out dealing in Game 1 for the Bobcats (20-12, 7-8 CAC), setting down five out of the first eight batters that he faced via the strikeout.

On the offensive side of the diamond, the Frostburg State got the majority of its production in the second inning. Dylan Shupe continued his hot hitting with a double down the left field line to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Shupe was singled over to third by Garrett Price and then Jon Keeler came to the plate and hit a fly ball to right field that proved to be deep enough to score the junior from third for the first run of the game. After a walk, the Bobcats now had two men on base when J.K. Filauro sent a towering fly ball over the left field fence.

The 4-0 advantage following the offensive outburst in the second would be more than enough run support for Politz. The senior right-hander got his mojo back and it clearly showed as he was carving the Spartan hitters up left and right. He finished the day with a season-high nine strikeouts and surrendered just two hits in the complete game performance.

FSU tacked on single runs in the third and fifth innings to bring its final total to six in the first contest.

Kevin Kean lead all hitters with three hits at the plate in Game 1. Filauro finished with two hits, including his three-run bomb, as did Shupe and Price. J. Keeler and Rob Jennings added an RBI apiece to round out the lineup.

In Game 2, Frostburg was able to strike the first blow in the bottom of the first. Price singled his way on and then later scored on a single to left field from Shupe.

York (Pa.) (16-15, 6-9 CAC) finally countered with its first run of the day in the top of the second. After getting the first two men aboard and bunted over, the Spartans got an RBI groundout from left fielder Sean Mohollen.

The Bobcats were unable to keep the Spartan lineup at bay as they scored seven unanswered from the third inning to the sixth inning.

Now down 8-1, FSU threatened to cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Bobcats got back-to-back-to-back singles from Shupe, Ryan McGuigan, and Josh Jackson to start the inning but the Spartan defense escaped allowing just one run to come across the plate.

Shupe finished the second contest going 3-for-4 with one of the two RBI to pace the lineup. Kean added another two hits in Game 2 and Pat Sapp drove in the other Bobcat run.

Tyler Alexander picked up the win on the mound for York (Pa.), allowing just five hits in five innings. On the offensive side for the opposition, Colin Porter finished with a team-high three RBI and Justin Cohen lead the way in regards to hits with three.

Frostburg State will await the result of tomorrow’s CAC matchup between Wesley and St. Mary’s (Md.) to find out where it will play on Tuesday for the opening round of the CAC tournament.
