CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Shoremen of Washington College seemed to have had the Bobcats’ number in recent years regardless of the talent on the Frostburg side, but this year’s squad would not be denied the victory as they rolled in Chestertown, 12-3.
Box Score
Hoping to build off of last weekend’s finale while also seeking to avenge last year’s lopsided loss to the Shoremen (9-9), Frostburg State (13-8) jumped on top right out of the gate.
Second baseman J.K. Filauro took a fastball in the elbow to lead off the game and would eventually score on a two-out frozen rope up the middle by Dylan Shupe, giving the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead.
Frostburg State would add to its lead the very next inning. With one out, senior Garrett Price got things going with a double down the left field line. Matt Donaldson then singled the Bobcat catcher home for the first run of the inning. The lineup would produce four more runs before the segment came to a close, thanks to a trio of run scoring doubles from Ryan McGuigan, Kevin Kean, and Shupe.
Frostburg starter Curtis Randall now had more than enough offensive insurance to comfortably go after the Washington hitters. Randall did a great job of keeping the opposition off-balance all day as he gave the Bobcats 6.0 solid innings of work, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out five.
The Bobcats tacked on in the seventh with another big offensive outburst. Five hits, including another three doubles, contributed to five runs, upping the lead to 11-1. Frostburg would get one more run on the board before the Shoremen scored a pair of unearned runs to bring the final tally to 12-3.
FSU finished with a whopping 16 hits on the day. Shupe had himself a fine day at the plate, leading the Bobcats with four hits and three RBI. Kean and Donaldson each had three hits on the day, combining for five RBI, while Filauro and Price also contributed with two hits apiece.
The Frostburg State baseball team will hope to carry the momentum into its much anticipated weekend series with CAC rival Salisbury. The series will kick-off with a single nine-inning game this afternoon in Salisbury, Md. starting at 3:00 pm. Live stats will be available for the game and can be accessed through the Salisbury Athletics website.
