WASHINGTON, D.C. – Traveling to our nation’s capital for the second time in less than a week, Frostburg State put on a hitting display on Tuesday that resembled more of a laser show as the Bobcats handily defeated Catholic University of America 11-2.
Box Score
With the sun shining and the temperature hovering around 60 degrees, the weather outside had the game feeling more like a midsummer contest in comparison to the recent wintry mix to hit Frostburg and the Bobcat hitters took advantage.
Frostburg State (11-6) got things started in the top of the first with a single up the middle by senior J.K. Filauro. Junior Kevin Kean then followed right up with a triple to the right-center gap that plated Filauro for the first run of the game.
Catholic (11-6) countered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the first and the two squads would again swap runs in the second inning to bring the score even at 2-2.
Junior starting pitcher Curtis Randall and the rest of the Bobcat relievers would limit the Cardinal hitters to just two hits from the third inning on, as they gave the Bobcat hitters a fair opportunity to put some unanswered damage on the board.
Frostburg State added a run in the top of the third when junior Rob Jennings blasted a ball over the right fielder’s head that would bring Kean around to score from first.
The Bobcats continued to hit the ball hard all day to every part of the park and beyond as 16 hits were tallied up, including a solo home run that junior Dylan Shupe squared up and sent soaring over the fence in left-center in the fifth inning, his first in a Bobcat uniform.
Randall picked up the win on the mound, allowing just two runs on four hits in 5.0 innings. The win was his first of the season and also his first as a Bobcat. Frostburg State also got solid performances out of the bullpen from juniors Austin Poretz and A.J. Rosenthal and freshman southpaw Zach Lawhorn.
Pacing the lineup for the Bobcats were Filauro and Kean who each went 3-for-4 at the plate. Kean added three RBI to his three hits, as did Jennings to his two hits. Shupe drove in two runs as well, including his solo home run.
The Bobcats have two players now with double-digit hitting streaks, Kean at 15 games in a row and Jennings at 12.
Sean Van Gieson suffered the loss on the mound for the Cardinals. The scoring for the Cardinals came from Brendan Breslin and Kevin Nader.
The Frostburg State baseball team will hope to continue the hot hitting when it travels to Annville, Pa. on Thursday for a contest with Lebanon Valley starting at 3:30 pm.
