WASHINGTON, D.C. – Down by a pair of runs heading into the final two innings, the Frostburg State baeball team rallied with five-unanswered to stave off the Bison of Gallaudet for an 8-5 victory.
Box Score
On a day where gusty winds turned well-hit balls into routine fly outs on either side, Frostburg State (9-4) was able to manufacture runs in key situations late in the game to take down Gallaudet in our nation’s capital.
The Bobcats scored the game’s first run in the top of the third inning when senior Pat Sapp, after leading off the inning with the lone extra-base hit of the game, scored on an errant throw by Bison shortstop Tommy Barksdale.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Gallaudet was able to take the lead, plating two runs on two hits.
The 2-1 Bison advantage was short-lived though as Frostburg capitalized on a pair of Gallaudet mistakes, scoring two runs of its own to regain the lead, 3-2.
The relentlessness of the Bison showed in the very next inning, as they once again took the lead right back from the Bobcats. Four hits, including a big 2-RBI single by Chris Guinn, would help bring in three runs, now giving them a 5-3 lead.
With just six outs remaining, the Bobcats showed their resiliency to accept defeat as they have done on several occurrences in the early half of the year. Frostburg was able to load the bases with the first three batters before Sapp drove in the first run of the inning with a single to right field. Junior Matt Donaldson came up with a big pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the very next at-bat to tie the game at 5-5. After a groundout to move runners to second and third, senior Garrett Price came to the plate and with two outs he poked the ball into right field, once again giving the Bobcats the outright lead and this time for good.
Freshman Connor Cooper gave the Bobcats a good 4.0 innings in his first collegiate start on the mound. Junior Kenny Georgius would factor in the decision, coming out of the pen for a scoreless seventh to run his record up to 5-0 now on the season. Junior Dylan Shupe, who spent the first seven innings behind the dish, turned around and shut the door in the final two innings to record his first save of the season.
Sapp and junior Kevin Kean led the lineup with two hits apiece, while Price and Donaldson had 2 RBI each.
Guinn and two other Bison paced the opposing lineup with two hits each.
Frostburg State returns to action this weekend for its CAC opener versus Wesley. The Bobcats open up the weekend series in Dover, Del. with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm this Saturday.
