Baseball Splits DH With Former Conference Foe Stevenson

STEVENSON, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team came off of the bus looking a bit sluggish and it showed in Game 1, as it was beaten 3-2 in walk-off fashion, but the Bobcats were able to get the bats rolling in Game 2 on their way to a 16-5 to victory to split the day with Stevenson.

Riding an eight-game winning streak coming into the day, Stevenson (9-2) carried its momentum into the first game as it struck first in the bottom of the second. The Mustangs got a bloop single to lead off the inning and after a sacrifice bunt and two more bloop singles, the home team now held a 1-0 advantage over visiting Frostburg State (7-4).

The Bobcats were able to get the lead-off man aboard in the second and third innings but they could not capitalize on the early hitting.

Frostburg finally broke through in the top of the fourth with a big two-run blast over the left field fence by junior Rob Jennings. Fellow junior Kevin Kean scored on the home run as FSU grabbed a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Tom Goulian doubled down the right field line and later scored on a wild pitch as the hosts tied the game at 2-2. Two innings later, Ian Eberly singled home the game-winning run to give Stevenson a 3-2 walk-off victory.

Bobcat senior Cody Ellsworth suffered the loss, striking out two and surrendering three runs.

In the second game, Frostburg State rolled to a 16-5 win behind 14 hits and 14 runs in the first three innings.

Junior Dylan Shupe drove in two runs to accent a six-run first inning. Seniors Jon Keeler and J.K. Filauro also posted RBIs as the Bobcats led 6-0 after one.

After three quick outs in the bottom of the first for Stevenson, the Bobcats were at it again in the top of the second. Keeler smacked a two-run double to left field and Jennings scored on an error as FSU plated three more runs and led 9-0.

Another quick inning for Stevenson in the second gave way to five more runs for Frostburg in the top of the third. Junior Danny Morris started the scoring with an RBI single to right. Filauro capped the outburst with a three-run home run to left field that extended the Bobcats lead to 14-0.

The Bobcats later tacked two runs in the sixth, while Stevenson scored one in the fourth and closed out the game with four runs in the seventh.

Senior Doug Politz threw 5.0 innings with three strikeouts. He limited the Mustangs to just one run and two hits. Filauro finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs, while Keeler drove in three and scored once.

Frostburg State returns to action later today when it faces SUNY Oneonta at 1:00 pm in Emmitsburg, Pa.
