ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – Despite having four Bobcats in double figures, including a double-double by junior Elaina Hummel, the Frostburg State women’s basketball team dropped an overtime loss to St. Mary’s 94-85, Wednesday evening.
With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 6-16 and 2-7 in the Capital Athletic Conference. St. Mary’s improves to overall 10-9 and 4-5 in the conference.
The Seahawks came out strong in the first half, reaching a double-digit lead on several occasions. The Bobcats just couldn’t overthrow the lead and went into halftime down five, despite an 11 point effort by senior guard Steph Straka.
The Bobcats fell into a double-digit deficit, 51-40 with 15:44 left in the second half. With a couple of quick hits by Hummel and Straka, freshman forward Deara Parker steered the comeback.
On the defensive end, Parker swiped one away and finished the fast break off a Straka assist for two, to bring the Bobcats within five at 14:30. A made free throw and yet another connection with Straka, Parker hit two more to notch the score a 51-49 with 14 minutes left to play.
The hosts maintained a minor lead as the game got down to the wire, but the Bobcats wouldn’t back down.
Frostburg finally gained the lead at 6:11, as Parker dished to sophomore guard Ronje’ James who drained one from the outside, to post the score at 68-67.
From the sixth minute on, the teams knotted the score four more times before Sophie Pruden hit a buzzer beater to claim the final tie and to send the game into OT with the score at 78-78.
The Bobcats ran out of steam and the Seahawks proved to be too much as they scored 16 points and held the advantage for the duration of the extra frame.
FSU’s 85 points are the highest since the 2008-09 season in an 87-48 win over Pitt-Bradford.
The Bobcats were led by Straka and Hummel who both finished with 19 apiece while Hummel added 12 rebounds. Freshman Jodie Gaul came off the bench and notched her first double-digit performance of her collegiate career with 12 while James contributed 10.
St. Mary’s also had four Seahawks notch double-digits, led by Sophie Pruden who posted a game-high 21 points.
