WASHINGTON, D.C. – Behind a late scoring surge, 10th ranked Catholic pulled away from visiting Frostburg State for a 15-7 win in the season opener for both schools, Tuesday.

The Bobcats (0-1) held a 6-4 lead with 24:01 to play in the second half, but the Cardinals (1-0) seized control of the contest behind a 10-0 run that handed them a 14-6 lead with 8:00 minutes to play in regulation.
The two teams traded goals inside the final two minutes for the 15-7 final.
Juniors Malory Brunett (3 goals) and Megan White (2 goals) accounted for five of FSU’s scores and played a key role in keeping the game close until the Cardinals second-half run.
Catholic opened with the contest’s first three goals, but the Bobcats didn’t back down. White and Brunett quickly answered for FSU, scoring back-to-back goals within a 14-second span as FSU trailed just 3-2. Senior Rachel Dwyer evened things at 3-3 with a goal at 8:51.
Katie Miller gave CUA a one-goal advantage at intermission with a late tally, just 18 seconds until halftime.
Brunett and White struck again early in the second. Brunett found the net 29 seconds into the second half and White put the Bobcats in front 5-4 at 25:45. Senior Taylor Cassatt gave the visitors a two-goal cushion with a goal at 24:01 and Frostburg appeared poised for the upset.
However, Catholic rebounded with the game’s next 10 goals starting at 22:12 and ending at 8:00 for a comfortable 14-6 edge.
Brunett scored her third and final tally with 1:27 left and Catholic’s Samantha Hawkins posted the final score of 15-7 with a goal with just six seconds showing.
The Cardinals held a 42-17 lead in shots, including a 25-10 edge in the decisive second half. CUA held a 14-9 advantage in draw controls and was nearly perfect (11-of-12) on clears.
Bobcat junior Karoline Miller earned the start in net and made nine saves. Brunett and freshman Marissa Howk each scooped up four ground balls.
Lindsay Brophy scored five times and handed out an assist to lead CUA in scoring. Yamseen Ajdari stopped just one shot for the win.
The Bobcats return to action this Saturday with a road contest at Bridgewater (Va.) at 3:00 pm.
