Baseball Caps Series At Roanoke With 11-5 Victory

SALEM, Va. – The junior tandem of Danny Morris and Rob Jennings each drove in three runs to help the Frostburg State baseball team to an 11-5 win over Roanoke in the third and final game of the season-opening series for FSU, Saturday.

The Bobcats (2-1) held a 5-3 lead following the fifth inning, but exploded for six runs in the sixth for an 11-3 advantage.

Morris had a big afternoon, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs and a double. Meanwhile, Jennings was just 1-for-4, but he drove in three and scored twice. Senior Pat Sapp and freshman Ryan McGuigan each had two hits and scored twice.

Senior starter Cody Ellsworth tossed 4.0 solid innings for the victory. He fanned six, allowed six hits and three runs.

McGuigan started the scoring in the sixth with an RBI single to left field that plated junior Brandon Remalia. Two batters later and with the bases loaded, Jennings smacked a two-run double to center field that scored McGuigan and Sapp and the Bobcats weren’t done.

Morris followed Jennings’ double with a single to center that scored junior Dylan Shupe. The final two runs came off the bat of freshman Zach Keeler with a two-run single to center that scored both Morris and Jennings.

FSU plated two runs in the top of the second for a brief 2-0 lead, but Roanoke (2-4) rebounded with a pair of their own in the bottom of the frame to knot the contest at 2-2. Morris and Remalia each drove home a run in the top of the second.

The Bobcats grabbed the lead for good in the top of the third. Sapp scored on an error to start the inning followed by a sacrifice fly from Jennings and an RBI single from Morris and FSU led 5-2.

Roanoke scored one in the bottom of the fifth and two in the seventh, but Frostburg proved too much. Brian Kluge and Gavin Pelliterri each had two hits and an RBI for the Marroons, while Jacob McMillan suffered the loss after allowing three runs in the third inning.

Frostburg State returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Old Westbury in Crozet, Va. starting at 1:00 pm.
