Women’s Hoops Falls to CAC Leader Marymount 70-52.

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State University women’s basketball team had no answer for the long-range game of Capital Athletic Conference leader, Marymount University, as they fell 70-52, Wednesday evening in the final home game of the regular season.

Both Frostburg (6-18-2-9 CAC) and Marymount (21-4, 11-1 CAC) battled in the beginning minutes of the first half as the game was tied on three separate occasions. It wasn’t until 13:05 that the Saints swiped the lead with a three ball from Katelyn Fischer.

Refusing to fall too far behind, the Bobcats scraped to get within five multiple times until six minutes were left on the first half clock.

The Saints stretched a double-digit lead in the final minutes of the first frame by outscoring the Bobcats 18-10 in the paint and scoring 10 points off of turnovers to FSU’s three. The teams went to the locker room with the halftime score at 33-22.

Marymount maintained the lead throughout the rest of the contest. The Saints attacked the offensive end with 4-for-8 second half three-pointers and 6-for-14 (42.9%) overall. The Bobcats struggled to get outside looks as they ended the night just 1-for-2 from behind the arc.

FSU was led by junior Elaina Hummel who posted 18 points including a 6-for-7 free throw performance. Hummel leads the team in free throw shooting at an impressive 86%. Sophomore Ronje’ James also notched double-figures with 10. Senior Steph Straka led in rebounding for her fifth time this year with six, while also contributing nine points and two assists.

The Saints were led by Aileen Maknati and Tynisha Parks who scored 18 points apiece. Fischer ended with 14 and also tallied nine assists.

Despite the loss, the Bobcats locked up the sixth seed in the CAC playoffs when they travel to the third seed, York (Pa.) on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7:00 pm.

Prior to the first round, the Bobcats face York for their last regular-season game for a 1:00 pm contest on February 16th.
