Women’s Basketball Rallies from 13 Down to Stun Towson in Double Overtime Exhibition

TOWSON, Md. - Frostburg State women's basketball closed its exhibition slate with an upset victory in double overtime over Towson, earning a 94-92 win on Thursday afternoon. Senior Jenna Muha led Frostburg State in scoring with 29 points, followed closely by 25 points from junior Ayla Hileman.

The Bobcats came out hot of the gates at SECU Arena, jumping out to a 9-2 advantage after a pair of Muha baskets, a Hileman three-pointer, and a lay-up from junior Julie Spinelli. After an early Towson timeout, the Tigers would close the Frostburg State lead to three late in the first quarter, but two Muha free throws pushed her total to ten first-quarter points and gave the Bobcats a 23-18 advantage after the opening quarter.

Towson would control the second quarter, outscoring Frostburg State 25-10, and taking a 43-33 lead into the halftime break. The Bobcats led for 13:06 of the game's first 20 minutes.

To open the second half, the teams traded baskets, with freshman Riley McCabe scoring a mid-range jumper and Muha continuing her strong first half with a pair of baskets to cut the Bobcats' deficit to eight points. Over the final 5:02 of the quarter, Hileman hit two more three-pointers, but Frostburg State trailed 59-48 heading into the fourth quarter.

Hileman opened the fourth quarter with her fourth made three-pointer, bringing the Bobcats back within eight. After scoring just two points in the game's first three quarters, Spinelli came alive, scoring six points and assisting sophomore Karlee Hawkins over the team's next four possessions. Hawkins, redshirt-sophomore Sophie Nichols, and sophomore Raegan Ogle were deployed in Frostburg State's pressing unit throughout the fourth quarter, leading to six Towson turnovers in the quarter.

With the deficit at six points and under three minutes to play, Spinelli knocked down her first three-pointer of the afternoon to push the score to 67-64 with 2:39 remaining. Towson responded with a basket on the following possession, but Hileman found herself open once again, nailing a three-pointer to bring Frostburg State within two with 1:58 to go.

Another Towson basket pushed the Tigers' lead back to four, but McCabe went two-for-two from the free-throw line with 1:01 to play to keep the game in the balance.

After trailing by as many as 13 points in regulation, Frostburg State found its deficit at just three
points with 11 seconds remaining following a 1-of-2 trip to the free-throw line from Towson. McCabe drove to the basket and kicked it out to Hileman, who was spotted up in the corner in front of Frostburg State's bench. The junior guard buried her sixth three-pointer of the game with five seconds remaining to send the game into overtime tied at 72-72, keeping Frostburg State's bid for a road upset alive.

In the first overtime, the teams traded baskets back and forth. Spinelli scored early on a drive to the basket, followed up by a three-pointer from Muha to bring the Bobcats back within two. With less than a minute to go in the overtime period, redshirt-junior Mandy Roman secured an offensive rebound and scored the put-back to make it 81-81, ultimately sending the game into a second overtime.

The second overtime saw Frostburg State in control for the majority, as Muha scored the Bobcats' first four points of the overtime, including a basket 12 seconds into the second overtime to give Frostburg State its first lead since the 4:01 mark in the second quarter. McCabe went a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in the second overtime, as the Bobcats as a team converted 11-of-16 free throws throughout the period.

After a pair of late Towson baskets cut the Bobcats' lead to one, Muha went 1-of-2 from the free-throw line to make it 94-92 in favor of Frostburg State with six seconds to play. On the game's final play, Roman made another crucial play, blocking Towson's game-winning attempt as time expired.

Muha led Frostburg State in scoring and rebounding with 29 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 10-of-14 from the floor. Hileman's 25 points came on a 7-of-10 mark from the floor and a 6-of-8 mark on three-pointers, adding three assists while leading the team with a +/- of +22.

Not fearing the spotlight as a freshman, McCabe scored 13 points and secured ten rebounds, while shooting 9-of-10 from the free-throw line and dishing out three assists. Spinelli finished with 14 points, four rebounds, and three assists, scoring 12 of her points in the game's final 20 minutes. Roman finished with three points, nine rebounds, and two assists, to go along with the game-sealing block.

Frostburg State shot 29-of-62 (46.8%) from the field, 8-of-22 (36.4%) on three-pointers, and 28-of-39 (71.8%) from the free-throw line. Towson shot 34-of-91 (37.4%) from the field, 9-of-31 (29.0%) on three-pointers, and 15-of-26 (57.7%) from the free-throw line. The Bobcats outscored the Tigers 61-49 in the second half and overtime periods, including a 7-of-15 mark from three. Despite trailing by 13 with 3:16 to play in the third quarter, the Bobcats battled back with several players stepping up in key moments to earn the victory over Towson.

The Bobcats open up regular-season play on Friday, Nov. 13, at 5 p.m. against Mansfield (Pa.) inside Bobcat Arena as part of the Jim Crawley Conference Challenge.
