BUENA VISTA, Va. – After an even first half battle, the Southern Virginia Knights took advantage of a second half run to gain a 60-48 victory over the Frostburg State women’s basketball team, Tuesday evening.

After minutes of trading buckets, the Knights held a three point advantage, 10-7, eight minutes into the ball game. Junior guard Elaina Hummel downed a three-point play off a Shalanda Haney assist to bring the game within two at the 12 minute mark.
The Knights’ (9-6) Ann Kuroki helped the host’s gain an edge of five points, 15-10, from a steal and two trips to the foul line at 9:18.
Down seven with two minutes left in the first half, sophomore Ronje’ James turned on the offense, knocking down six straight points to post the halftime score at 21-20, in favor of the home team.
Four quick points put SVU up five, 25-20, two minutes into the second frame but the Bobcats started firing, sinking three 3-pointers from Steph Straka and Hummel. Senior forward Brynn Arnone played a key factor in the Bobcat run, scoring two of her own, grabbing two boards and assisting two of the long balls to give FSU the lead, 31-33 at 14:04.
Southern Virginia hit some critical shots and hit 21-of-30 from the stripe to give them one last push to post the final score at 60-48.
Arnone led the Bobcats in scoring with 14 and also pulled down seven rebounds in the loss. James and Hummel both tossed in 11 points apiece while James added five steals and four assists. Straka paced the Bobcats in rebounding with eight.
Southern Virginia had five in double-digits including a 14 point performance from Kuroki.
FSU (5-15) returns to Capital Athletic Conference play when they travel to Wesley Saturday, February 2 for a 1:00 pm contest.
