FROSTBURG, Md. – Despite grabbing an early lead, the Frostburg State baseball team dropped its home finale to No. 18 Washington & Jefferson, 14-8, Tuesday afternoon.

The Bobcats (21-19) grabbed an early lead after plating five runs in the bottom of the second inning for a quick 5-0 edge. Senior John Barrett started the scoring with a solo homerun to right center field. Sophomore Mike Virbickis singled and senior Adam Baxley walked to put two runners on. Junior J.K. Filauro singled to center to score both runs for a 3-0 lead.
The next batter, senior Shane Boyd, capped the inning with a two-run bomb to right field for the 5-0 lead.
The Presidents (28-6) chipped away at their deficit with a pair of RBI singles in the top of the third. Both teams were held scoreless over the fourth and fifth innings until the top of the sixth when W&J scored nine runs and took control of the contest. Six different players drove in a run, highlighted by a two-run triple from Kyle McLain in the middle of the frame.
Washington & Jefferson scored three more runs in the top of the seventh for a 14-5 lead.
FSU added three runs over the final two innings of play. In the eighth, senior Doug Anuszewski scored one run with a sacrifice fly to right field and senior Adam Summerfelt drove home one more with a ground out to first.
In the ninth, sophomore Will Jones doubled to right center that scored sophomore Ryan Derr for the game’s final run.
W&J pounded out 18 hits, including five during their nine-run fifth inning. Tyler Dean earned the win after tossing four innings in relief of starter Christian Wheeler. Junior David O’Brien endured the loss for the Bobcats giving up four runs, three earned, in 0.1 innings of work in the sixth inning.
Boyd and Filauro each drove home two runs and scored once to lead Frostburg.
FSU caps its season with a non-conference doubleheader at Mt. Aloysius tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
