Game 2
O’Dell improved to 5-2 on the season and allowed only four hits and struck out six. The Bobcats scored in the first five innings to cruise to an opening-game victory.
FSU did most of their damage early on, scoring six runs in the first two innings. The Bobcats opened the game with four straight hits. Torian Cyrus tripled, J.K. Filauro singled, John Barrett doubled and Pat Sapp singled to give Frostburg an early 1-0 advantage. Doug Anuszewski and Adam Summerfelt hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to push the lead to 3-0.
After O’Dell navigated the second inning, Adam Baxley was hit by a pitch and Shane Boyd reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt that was booted by the Seahawk defense. After Cyrus was retired, Filauro singled again to load the bases. Barrett then hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Baxley to give the Bobcats runners at the corners with two away. Another error by the Seahawk defense allowed Sapp to reach base and Boyd to score. Anuszewski followed with an RBI single to right for a commanding 6-0 lead.
Frostburg (17-12, 8-7) added another run in the third on a double by Cyrus and scored two more in the fourth and fifth innings.
Cyrus, Anuszewski, Filauro and Barrett all collected two hits to power the Bobcat lineup in game one.
In the second game, both teams plated three runs in the first inning before Frostburg’s Tico Mendoza and St. Mary’s Devon Jerrard settled in. Neither pitcher gave up another run until the fifth inning.
St. Mary’s ( 14-16, 6-12) had two hits and benefited from a Frostburg error to claim a 5-3 advantage heading into the bottom of the fifth. But the FSU offense woke up in a hurry, scoring seven runs highlighted by Barrett’s three-run jack.
Three straight singles began the inning for FSU to set the stage for Barrett’s shot. After he cleared the bases, Anuszewski was hit by a pitch and came all the way around to score on Summerfelt’s single that was misplayed by the Seahawk defense and allowed him to reach third. Later in the inning, Baxley walked and stole second and Boyd laced a two-run single to left to complete the Bobcat’s seven-run outburst.
St. Mary’s scored a run in both the sixth and seventh innings off reliever AJ Rosenthal, but their rally was cut short. Rosenthal picked up the win after throwing 2 1/3 innings and allowing an earned run.
Boyd collected three hits and had two RBIs in game two and Barrett went 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs. FSU’s lineup has now scored 10-plus runs in each of its last four games.
