Women’s Lacrosse Rally Falls Short In Season Finale

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women’s lacrosse team brought a second-half deficit to one goal but couldn’t complete the comeback in an 11-10 loss to Washington & Jefferson, Wednesday night.

The Bobcats trailed by five goals with just over 21 minutes remaining in the second half and closed the gap to one, 11-10, with 6:02 to play. Sophomore Megan White scored twice and classmate Malory Brunett added one goal as the Bobcats brought the score to 8-10. After W&J tacked on a score at 8:54, Brunett added two more goals to bring the count to 11-10.

Frostburg had two chances late in the game. A shot from senior Ali Kapustin was saved by W&J keeper Julia McLellan at 2:59 and White had a shot sail high with 1:45 showing to end the Bobcat threat.

The difference came in the opening half of play as W&J held a 6-5 scoring advantage. The Presidents (9-4) jumped ahead 3-1 at 21:06, but FSU battled back behind two goals that tied the game at 11:41. Brunett and junior Taylor Cassatt found the net to even the score at 3-3 for the game’s only tie.

Washington & Jefferson answered with a 3-0 run for a 6-3 lead at 5:04. Cassatt closed out the first half with two-straight goals for the Bobcats.

W&J opened second half action with four-consecutive goals for a 10-5 lead before the Bobcats started their late game rally.

Brunett led FSU in scoring with five goals, while Cassatt netted three of her own. Kapustin tied a career and season high with four assists. In net, junior Naomi Swann made six saves.

Brittany Fradkin led the Presidents with five goals while McLellan finished with five saves. W&J held a slim 25-24 margin in shots and were a perfect 6-of-6 in free-position shots.  W&J won 15 draw controls to help control the tempo.

Frostburg State caps the season with a 4-12 overall record.
