Game 2
York (11-13, 7-5) crossed home plate seven times in the fifth and sixth innings to grab a slim 9-8 advantage. The Bobcats tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. Torian Cyrus hit a one out double and John Barrett reached on an error by the Spartan defense, allowing Cyrus to score from second. Pat Sapp followed with a single to right and Doug Anuszewski walked to load the bases with two down. FSU was unable to take the lead as Brandon Ullom got Mike Virbickis to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.
In extra innings, neither team could get much going until the ninth inning when Frostburg had runners on first and second with nobody out, but Dan McNamara retired the next three Bobcat hitters to turn it over to the Spartan lineup.
In York’s last at-bat, Derek Pitzer drew a leadoff walk and was pinch ran for by J.J. Oleniacz. Oleniacz was bunted into scoring position by Sean McCann and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Frostburg reliever AJ Rosenthal intentionally walked Colbe Herr and Nic Long to set up a possible inning ending double play ball, but Colin Porter hit the game-winning single down the left field line.
Cyrus and Sapp led the offensive output with three hits apiece, and John Barrett went 2-for-3 with two driven in. Tyler Hawthorne, Adam Baxley, and J.K. Filauro also drove in a run in the loss.
Tico Mendoza threw 4 1/3 innings and got the no decision, while Rosenthal took the loss after tossing the final 3 1/3 and gave up three earned runs.
In game one, the Bobcats only mustered two hits offensively and squandered a terrific pitching performance by senior Zach O’Dell. O’Dell scattered five hits over six innings and did not allow an earned run.
York’s Dan Gurganus and Ullom combined to shut down the Bobcat attack. Gurganus struck out seven in six innings and Ullom pitched a perfect seventh to earn his fifth save of the season.
Frostburg (13-12, 5-7) returns home tomorrow for the first game of an eight game home stand against Lebanon Valley at 3:00 p.m.
