FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Despite a strong pitching performance from Zach O’Dell in game one, the Bobcats dropped the conference opener, 2-1, before coming back to beat the Eagles 6-3 in game two at Dickinson Stadium.
Game 1
Game 2
Both pitchers held the offenses in-check in the opening game, with neither team scoring until the fourth inning. In the top of the fourth, Jon Keeler drew a one-out walk and Tyler Hawthorne singled down the right field line to give FSU runners at the corners. J.K. Filauro knocked in Keeler with a groundout to the shortstop.
The Eagles answered in the bottom half on a sac fly by Brendan Jones.
O’Dell settled in after the fourth and allowed just one hit over the course of the next 2 and 2/3 innings. However, the game came down to Mary Washington’s final at-bat. With the score tied 1-1, Jonathan Haught singled, but his pinch-runner was picked off at first base. O’Dell then got a ground out to second base, but a two-out rally by the Eagles that included a walk and two singles sealed the game for Mary Washington.
Frostburg jumped out to a two-run lead in the second inning of game two. Singles by Keeler and Garret Price and a walk by Adam Summerfelt loaded the bases for Filauro, who knocked in his second run of the day on a fielder’s choice. Shane Boyd then singled to right field to plate the other run.
Mary Washington tied the score at 2 in the bottom of the third, before Frostburg blew the game open with two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Pat Sapp had a two RBI single that scored Filauro and Summerfelt in the fourth and Summerfelt smacked a single to center in the fifth to pick up two RBIs to make the game 6-2.
The Eagles picked up a run in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough as Joe Markiewcz, Jr. closed out the game.
Junior Doug Politz put forth a strong pitching effort, going five innings with six strikeouts and giving up only one earned run. Keeler was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in the second game. Price and Summerfelt also finished the game with two hits apiece.
Frostburg is now 5-3 on the season and 1-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play. FSU returns to the diamond on Thursday when they travel to Washington College with first pitch scheduled at 2 p.m.
