No. 16 York Downs Frostburg in CAC Tilt

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's lacrosse team surrendered an early lead and eventually lost to No. 16 ranked York (Pa.) 19-6, Wednesday.

Sophomore Malory Brunett and junior Myra Derbyshire combined to give the Bobcats (4-6, 2-2) a 2-1 lead with 23:49 left in the opening half of play. Brunett scored on a free position at 25:03 and junior Taylor Cassatt found Derbyshire in front of the net for the second score at 23:49.

It was all York (9-2, 4-0) from then on as the Spartan offense took off with the game's next 12 goals. YCP scored the final 10 goals of the first half for an 11-2 lead at the break and opened the second half with two more scores (13-2).

Brunett and senior Ali Kapustin accounted for all four Bobcat goals in the second half as FSU regained some of its composure and played YCP more evenly in the second stanza. York held just a 6-4 scoring advantage over the final 25:47.

Kapustin ended the 12-0 run for the Bobcats with her first goal of the afternoon at 25:47 that cut the deficit to 13-3. At 19:10, Brunett scored her second of the game that kept the deficit at 10, 14-4.

The Spartans scored two goals over a 1:23 span, but Kapustin found the net for the second time of the half at 12:48. Junior Chelsea Feeney later found Brunett with 7:21 showing for the team's final score.

York held a dominating edge in shots (36-12) and controlled much of the game tempo with a 22-5 lead in draw controls.

Brunett's three goals led the Bobcat attack, followed by a pair from Kapustin. Brunett also added three ground balls and three draw controls. Sophomore Karoline Miller made four saves while suffering the loss.

Kerri Nicolich led the Spartans with five goals while Kim Wayson added four. Leah Schultz scored one goal and handed out one assist, but won nine draw controls, including six during York's 12-0 run.

Frostburg State travels to No. 2 ranked Salisbury this Saturday for a CAC game at noon.
