MARIETTA, OHIO – The No. 2 ranked Marietta College Pioneers exploded for 10 runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Frostburg State baseball team 18-0 at Don Schaly Stadium.
Sophomore Ryan D’Arcy failed to get out of the first inning, as the Pioneers pounded out eight hits before Tyler Hawthorne finally got the third out of the inning.
Marietta starter Mike Mahaffey retired the first 12 batters he faced until John Barrett singled through the left side of the infield. The Bobcats went down in order after the Barrett single to end the threat.
The Pioneers tacked on three more runs off of Tristen Beyer in the fifth inning to give them a commanding 15-0 advantage.
Frostburg got its first runner in scoring position in the sixth. Adam Baxley singled with one out and John Northam singled Baxley to second. After Leighton Cooper flied out to give FSU runners on first and second with two down, Mahaffey got Adam Summerfelt to pop out to get out of the jam.
FSU got two more hits in the ninth, but was unable to come up with the clutch hit they needed. Northam led off the inning with a single and Jon Keeler advanced him to second with a two out hit, but Logan Lewis got Mike Virbickis to groundout to end the game.
Northam was 2-for-2 on the day and Doug Anuszewski had the Bobcats only extra base hit on a double in the seventh.
Kenny Georgius pitched a perfect inning in relief for FSU and AJ Rosenthal, who is tied for the NCAA Division III lead in saves, threw a scoreless eighth.
Tim Saunders had two home runs for the Pioneers and went a perfect 4-for-4 on the day with five RBIs and five runs scored. His replacement at third base Aaron Hopper went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and scored two runs.
FSU returns to the diamond on Saturday when they travel to York (Pa.) for a three-game weekend series. The Bobcats play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. and follow it up with a single game on Sunday at noon.
