FROSTBURG, Md. - Senior pitcher Tico Mendoza pitched five scoreless innings of one-hit relief to earn the victory and give the Frostburg State baseball team a 6-4 Capital Athletic Conference win over Stevenson on Tuesday at Bob Wells Field. The Bobcats took two of three from the Mustangs.
Box Score
Mendoza shined after entering in the fourth inning. Besides allowing just the one hit, Mendoza walked just one batter while striking out two.
During the first inning, it didn't look as though any pitcher would enjoy the afternoon. Each team plated three runs, and Stevenson didn't get its rally started until after junior starting pitcher Joe Markiewicz Jr. retired the first two hitters. The next six batters reached, though, on four singles and two walks. Markiewicz did limit the damage as he forced a fielder's choice to leave the bases loaded and the score at 3-0.
The Bobcats (13-8, 5-4) also scored all three of their runs after two outs. Senior center fielder Torian Cyrus led off with a walk and later scored on a Doug Anuszewski double. Junior designated hitter Jon Keeler singled home Anuszewski and senior third baseman Adam Summerfelt to tie the game at 3-3. Summerfelt had singled and advanced to third on the Anuszewski double.
Frostburg added two more runs to take the lead in the second. And again, both scored after two outs. This time, Summerfelt singled to left to bring home Cyrus and senior John Northam to push the Bobcats to a 5-3 advantage.
Stevenson designated hitter Tony Prescott cut into the lead in the top of the third with a solo homer to center. That would be as close as the Mustangs would come as Mendoza closed and locked the door in the fourth.
Cyrus doubled and scored on junior Pat Sapp's single in the seventh to provide the insurance at 6-4, and CAC Pitcher of the Week AJ Rosenthal pitched a perfect ninth to earn his eighth save. The Bobcats are now 13-0 when leading after six innings.
Cyrus was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Summerfelt also had two hits along with the two RBIs and the run.
The Bobcats travel to No. 2 Marietta tomorrow for a non-conference game at 4:30 p.m.
