FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior John Barrett went 2-for-2 with a triple, a grand slam, a walk and a sac fly and drove in all seven runs for the Frostburg State baseball team in a 7-5 home victory against Gallaudet at Bob Wells Field.
Box Score
The Bobcat bullpen threw four shutout innings to seal the victory. Tico Mendoza struck out five in three innings of work, and AJ Rosenthal pitched the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season. Starter Joe Markiewicz Jr. went the first five innings giving up three earned runs and striking out eight Bison to earn the victory.
Three straight hits in the first inning opened the scoring for Frostburg. Pat Sapp doubled, Adam Summerfelt singled, and Barrett smoked a triple for his first two RBIs.
Gallaudet’s William Bissell led off the second with a triple and scored on a single to right by Jeremy Murphy to make the score 2-1.
With the bases loaded in the second, Barrett drilled a grand slam over the left field fence to give the hosts a commanding 6-1 lead.
The Bison pulled to within one after back-to-back two run innings in the fourth and fifth, but the Bobcat bullpen slammed the door, allowing just one hit over the next four innings.
Barrett’s final RBI came in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly that scored Torian Cyrus, who reached on a single earlier in the inning.
Barrett’s seven RBIs ranks second in FSU history with only former major league manager and current skipper of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Jim Riggleman surpassing him with eight against Davis and Elkins in 1972.
With the win, FSU improves to 9-6 and 3-0 at Bob Wells Field. The Bobcats hit the road on Tuesday when they finish their three-game series with Mary Washington at 3:00 p.m. The two teams split the first two games of the series.
