SALISBURY, Md. – After dropping game one 11-2, Frostburg State junior Doug Politz started game two and quieted the Sea Gull bats, scattering two hits and striking out eight in a complete game shutout at Salisbury University Field.
Game 1
Game 2
It was the first complete game shutout for FSU since Britton Quayle tossed a four-hitter to beat Franciscan University 4-0 on April 13, 2010.
Torian Cyrus started off the second game with a single up the middle. Cyrus advance to third on a failed pickoff attempt and a sacrifice bunt by Pat Sapp. Garrett Price singled to right for one of his four hits on the day to drive in Cyrus and give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
Andrew Levy held FSU scoreless over the next three innings but the Bobcat lineup would score two runs in each of the final three innings. In the fifth, Cyrus hit a two-run bomb to left, his first career homer, and Mike Virbickis picked up two RBIs on a double to left in the sixth. Adam Summerfelt added a double and an RBI in the seventh.
In game one Zach O’Dell held Salisbury scoreless over the first three innings, but a nine-run fourth broke the game open for the Sea Gulls. O’Dell threw three and one-third innings and gave up five earned runs for his first loss of the season.
FSU answered with two runs in the top of the fifth. J.K. Filauro singled and Cyrus doubled to give the Bobcats two runners in scoring position with one out. Sapp singled up the middle to score Filauro and Cyrus came around on a Doug Anuszewski sac fly.
Salisbury added two unearned runs in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Cyrus finished the day with four hits, while Summerfelt hit safely three times to lead the Bobcat lineup.
Frostburg (6-5, 2-2 CAC) and Salisbury (10-3, 3-2 CAC) meet again tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. to complete the three-game series.
