Second Half Comeback Falls Short for Women’s Basketball

FROSTBURG, Md. – A strong second half comeback fell short for the Frostburg State women’s basketball team as it lost its final home game of the season to Marymount, 78-69, Wednesday.

FSU (5-19, 3-12) trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half and battled back to within two midway through before eventually losing to Marymount (12-12, 9-6 ).

Junior Steph Straka and sophomore Elizabeth Erickson powered the way offensively in a back-and-forth opening half with eight points each. Straka sliced her way through the defense for eight points and two steals, while Erickson totaled eight points and 10 rebounds.

Frostburg emerged from a pair of four-point deficits in the opening minutes to lead 14-12 with 11:13 to play.

The Saints answer with back-to-back three-pointers to kick start an 18-0 run and blow open the first half. Sam Spencer and Katelyn Fischer each drilled two three-pointers during the run that covered roughly six minutes and gave the visitors a 30-14 run with 5:15 to play.

Sophomore guard Elaina Hummel hit a three-pointer of her own and sophomore RJ James hit a jumper to help trim the deficit to eight, 33-25 with under a minute play.

Marymount closed out the half with a 10-point advantage with a late basket.

Hummel helped spark the second half comeback for FSU. She drained a pair of three-pointers to help the Bobcats collect a 12-2 run as they cut their deficit to just two points, 47-45, with 10:14 showing.

Marymount again answered, this time with a 12-2 run of its own to push its lead back to 12 (59-47) with 6:02 to play. The Saints held their lead in double digits over the next six minutes until Hummel’s final three-pointer with 34 seconds left cut the deficit to single digits.

Hummel finished with 18 points, including 15 in the second half. She was perfect from beyond three-point range (4-of-4) and at the foul line (2-of-2) and was nearly perfect from the field (6-of-7).

Erickson added her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Straka added 12 points and four assists.

Four starters scored in double figures for Marymount as Fischer led the way with 25 points. Dominique Dickens, Jackie Bohenek and Julie Tomesheski each contributed 13.
