Men’s Soccer Ties Washington & Jefferson 2-2

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Frostburg State and Washington & Jefferson scored one goal in each half and were unable to break the tie despite two overtimes as they settled for a 2-2 draw, Wednesday evening.

Box Score

The Bobcats, ranked fourth in the region, remain undefeated at 10-0-3 while the Presidents slide to 3-5-3.

Freshman Michael Cronauer scored first for Frostburg and an early 1-0 lead. At 4:27, he knocked home a loose ball off a corner kick.

Thad Piscatelli evened the score at 1-1 for the hosts just past the 30-minute mark. Piscatelli, who entered the game at 25:52, scored on his first shot attempt of the game at 30:09.

Following the W&J goal, the two teams attempted just one shot over the remainder of the first period as the game headed to intermission locked at 1-1.

The game went back-and-forth through the first 23 minutes of the second half until Bobcat senior Ryan Russell handed the visitors a 2-1 lead. The Bobcats stopped a W&J attack at one of the field and transitioned to their offensive end before Russell scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season.

In the 80th minute, Washington & Jefferson had a handful of chances to even the score. Bobcat keeper Abiye Jack stopped at shot at 79:08 and 30 seconds later a President shot was hit wide of the net. The hosts had a corner kick at 79:49, but the Bobcat defense didn’t allow a shot as the contest remained 2-1.

Despite the Frostburg defensive effort, W&J tied the game in the final minutes of regulation as Roman Vukmanovich scored at 87:30 to tie it at 2-2.

Jack made one final save in regulation for the Bobcats on a Piscatelli break away in the closing seconds to keep the score tied.

The Bobcats grabbed the momentum in the first overtime. W&J had a corner kick early in the extra frame but FSU rebounded with two of their own corner kicks and the only three shots of the period. However, all three shots missed their mark and FSU couldn’t take advantage of the corners.

In the second OT, Jack stopped back-to-back W&J shots early on to keep the score at 2-2. Cronauer had a header sail high at 107:32 and sophomore Bryan Lentine had a shot saved a little over a minute later as time expired on the second frame.

Washington & Jefferson outshot FSU, 22-18, but the Bobcats held a 5-2 edge in the two overtimes. Both teams at seven corner kicks. Jack finished with a career-high 13 saves in goal, including six in the second half.

“We’re happy to escape with a tie. We were out played and out worked all game,” said head coach Keith Byrnes. “We have a couple of key conference matches coming up so we need to refocus and get ready for our next couple of games.”

The Bobcats return home this weekend as they host Mary Washington on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
