Ross Leads Bobcats to 5-3 Victory Over No. 21 Salisbury

FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior righthander Greg Ross (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) led the Frostburg State baseball team to a 5-3 victory over Capital Athletic Conference foe No. 21 Salisbury behind one of his best outings in a Bobcat uniform.

The Bobcats improved to 8-6 overall on the season and 4-3 in the CAC while the Sea Gulls are now 9-5 and 7-3 in the league.

Ross threw a complete game giving up just three runs on six hits and three walks while picking up a season and career-high 12 strikeouts over the 9.0 innings of work.

The Sea Gulls broke open the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning with their only three runs of the game. SU's rightfielder Brad Baylis singled to left field to load the bases and catcher Tyler Bennett doubled to left center to clear the bases and give the Sea Gulls a 3-0 lead.

The Bobcats got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth to bring them within one of the Sea Gulls. Junior Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) got hit by a pitch to lead off and freshman Tyler Hawthorne (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) and senior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) hit back-to-back singles to fill the base paths. Senior Scott Wilson (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) walked to put FSU on the scoreboard. With two outs, junior Garrett Price (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty (Emory & Henry)) took a 2-2 pitch to left field to bring home Heatwole and cut the SU lead to 3-2.

Frostburg State took the lead in the eigth with three runs on two hits and capitalizing on a Sea Gull error. Price led off the inning reaching on an error by SU's shortstop. Senior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) reached on an infield single to put two runners on. Junior John Barrett (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison (Hagerstown)) hit a fly ball to right field to move Price to within 90 feet of tying the game. Senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) laid down a perfect suicide squeeze to bring around Price and tie the game at three a piece. Greene advanced to second on the play to put the potential winning run in scoring position. Anuszewski drew a walk on a full count to put two runners on. Hawthorne doubled to right center to bring home Greene and Anuszewski and give the Bobcats their first lead of the game at 5-3.

Ross got two quick outs in the top of the ninth before Salisbury began to threaten the lead. Ken O'Neill reached on a single to short stop and Fred Kreiger doubled to centerfield to put the tying run on second base. After a brief coaching visit to the mound, Ross got Bill Root to ground out on a comebacker to end the game.

At the plate, Hawthorne went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Greene went 1-for-3 scoring the game winning run. Chris Greiner took the loss for Salisbury pitching 7.0 innings giving up four runs on five hits and striking out a game-high 13 batters.

The Bobcats and Sea Gulls face off again tomorrow in a doubleheader to cap the three-game stint with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
